To be honest.. As artists in business, creating art is only one part of the job. If you want people to notice your work and actually connect with it, the words you use matter too. Which is why learning to use your words and create engaging content can be a game changer for your business.

Recently, our students from Secret Artist’s Business and I had the chance to sit down with Anita, copywriter and head strategist at Wordfetti, in our In The House session. She shared some really useful insights about how artists can get unstuck with their social media and content strategy by improving their copywriting and messaging.


1. The Power of a Killer Hook

When it comes to social media posts or captions, a good hook is everything. If your first line doesn’t grab attention, your audience will keep scrolling. The goal of your hook is to make people stop and keep scrolling.

A few examples Anita encouraged us to try:

  • Self Identification: “To the artist struggling to make time for creativity - this is for you.”

  • Curiosity: “Ever wondered how I price my work? Here’s the method I use.”

  • Emotion: “I used to feel intimidated selling my art - here’s how I overcame that.”

The hook is your chance to connect with your audience and get them to stick around. Keep it simple, but make it meaningful.


2. Storytelling: Share the Why Behind Your Art

We’re all storytellers, whether we realise it or not. Every piece of art you create has a story behind it, and sharing that story is a great way to connect with your audience on a deeper level.

Instead of saying, “Here’s my latest painting,” try something like, “This piece was inspired by a walk I took on a rainy afternoon. The colours reminded me of the peace I felt in that moment, so I tried to capture that feeling.”

When you tell the story behind your art, it adds depth and makes your work feel more personal to your audience. People love to connect with the artist behind the art, and stories are a great way to do that.


3. Write for Your Audience, Not Just About Your Art

A lot of the time, artists write captions that focus solely on the art itself. But remember, you’re not just selling a painting… you’re selling an experience. Write for your audience by speaking to their wants, needs, or feelings.

Think about what your audience is looking for when they come to your page. What kind of space do they want to create with your art? How can your piece make their life better? Switching up your message to be more about the way they’re going to feel after having this art in their lives will help your art sell even more.


4. Selling Doesn’t Have to Be ‘Salesy’

A lot of the time, artists write captions that focus solely on the art itself. But remember, you’re not just selling a painting… you’re selling an experience. Write for your audience by speaking to their wants, needs, or feelings.

5. Consistency: Show Up Regularly

Consistency is key when it comes to content creation. But I get it—posting every single day can feel like a lot. The good news? You don’t have to overcomplicate it.

Start with a manageable posting schedule, whether it’s once a week or every couple of days. Keep things simple and show up consistently. Share your art, but also let your audience into your process and your life. People want to see what goes on behind the scenes.

The more consistent you are, the more your audience will connect with you. And that’s how you build a loyal following.
